Upcoming Talk at EWS with Liz Colton

Upcoming Talk at EWS with Liz Colton

We are pleased to invite you to EmmaTalks, an exciting part of our celebration of the Bicentennial of Emma Willard School. This thought-provoking program, which models the concept of TEDTalks, will take place on February 21, 2014. We will host the event at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus in Troy, New York.

EmmaTalks spotlights six women who, like Madame Willard, saw a global issue as an opportunity to cultivate meaningful and sustainable change. Emcee Elizabeth Colton 66, founding president of the International Museum of Women, will welcome the following speakers to the stage:

Shabana Basij-Rasikh: Head of School of Leadership Afghanistan; speaking on girls education

Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden 75: President and CEO of The Paradigm Forum GMBH; speaking on women in business

Courtney E. Martin: Author, feminist activist, strategist with TED and Aspen Institute; speaking on human-centered design in relation to womens health

Eden Full: Princeton undergraduate and innovator of the Sun Saluter; speaking on science and technology and cultural competence

Meg Lowman: Tropical rainforest canopy biologist; speaking on environment

Shamim Okolloh: Educator and community organizer; spotlighting entrepreneurship and youth within the broader context of global womens rights

Join the Emma Willard community on this very special day. Tickets are just $10.00. You can register here https://www.emmawillard.org/emmatalks/register

Please spread the word and share the news with your classmates, family, and friends.

We hope to see many of you there!

Ruthie Denton reports on her TWO new kitties, Willard and Sage!

“Roger and I were looking for a new kitten a few weeks ago and went to the

London animal shelter Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. A very helpful and

efficient young woman who turned out to be head of the cattery _ and

American _ came to our aid and we got talking. I asked her where she was

from. ‘Outside Albany,’ she said. ‘Oh yes, where?’ ‘Troy.’ I could not

believe my ears. I told her that in all my years of living in London I had

never met anyone who lived in Troy! She told me she lived near the Troy

Country Club and I said I lived not a million miles away from that on the

corner of Collins and Sycamore. Then she asked where I went to school and

when I said Emma Willard, she exclaimed, ‘So did I!’ We called the kitten

we chose Willard, as you would, but sadly, adorable though he was, he had

serious health issues so he is still in the infirmary at Battersea and we

have chosen to opt for another cat much as we fell in love with him when we

first saw him. Tomorrow we go and choose another.”

“This is Willard I’s brother who we were lucky enough to come across at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home when we went back on Friday and we’ve used the name a second time. Here he is that afternoon back at his new home in Clapham. He’s very cuddly and affectionate and as you can see a little ball of fluff. The Troy connection didn’t stop

with the Emma Willard coincidence: mother of Willard I and II rejoiced in

the name of Sage! _ Do you remember Russell Sage?

And some good news from Linda Glazer Toohey:

The one of Mike and me is from my 65th birthday trip to Paris. We took a day trip to Versailles (where the photo was taken) and Giverny. It made accepting that new Medicare card, much more palatable.

The other one is from our family vacation this summer in Cabo San Lucas. The tall guy in the photo is our youngest daughter Liz’s fianc. They got engaged a month ago. The other couple are our daughter Meg (the blonder one) and her husband Marc. They got married a year ago in Denver. Liz has decided that Denver’s altitude wasn’t high enough, so they are getting married at the top of Ajax Mountain in Aspen this coming August. Hopefully I’ll get to see more of Susan Antonides Carr, who lives in Denver, since both our girls have settled there.

And recently at my school, The Country School, I met a representative from EWS whose mom graduated two years behind us.

“Two Emma Willard alumnae meet up at TCS. Laura Burgess, from the Emma Willard Admission Office, was on campus today to meet with Beth Coyne, director of Secondary School Counseling. While here, she was pleased to meet up with another Emma Willard alumna, 3rd Grade teacher Kathy McCurdy!”

News from Anne Todd Osborne…love the nickname.

Fred and I have a new grandson, D. Knox Applegate Osborn. Knoxie was born Wednesday evening September 11th. Parents and 6 siblings (4 are our son, Hank’s, and 2 are his wife, Alexandria Applegate’s) completely ecstatic.

And I attended my grandson’s 2nd birthday today…unfortunately I take all the photos and forget to get in a photo myself. Here is Thomas with his mom today.

OK….I apologize but just can’t help it…….

Bonnie Hunter, globe “Trotta”

Please send us your photos. We would love to see what you are all doing.

No puns here…I’m on a field trip with my third graders doing a population study of a 50cm diameter on Long Island Sound. Try to keep 30 something kids out of the warm water on a beautiful fall day!

EWS News – Core Connector

I have been asked to be a “Core Connector” for our class and will give it a try. Periodically, I will post news or announcements the school wants us to have on this site.

I do not want to inundate you with repeated information you may get from other EWS sources, so please let me know if you find these posts too much, let me know and I will stick to just photos and news from classmates. Also, if you wish to be taken off my mailing list, let me know.

With that said….first announcement: Head of School, Trudy Hanmer, has written a book on EWS and will be on tour promoting it. Stop by and say hello if you find she is near you!

Please join Wrought with Steadfast Will author Trudy Hanmer at one of the upcoming book tour events below. Details for each book event can be found on our website http://www.emmawillard.org/alumnae/upcoming-events.

News from Ellen and Ruthie

Upcoming show for Ellen Wineberg

News from Ruthie in England – I can see the “Ruthie” eyes and smile in Jo’s face!! Ruthie – thank you for sharing your most wonderful day with all of us. The video was lovely and brought a tear to my eye for the happy couple. Kathy

As promised here’s a picture from my daughter’s wedding held at Gray’s Inn

in London on the 8th of June. It was the most magical day and after weeks of

cloud the sun came out for us and shone brilliantly. You may remember I sent

pictures of my son’s wedding a while ago – he and Annabel, far right in the

picture, were best man and maid of honour (matron, really, but Annabel

wouldn’t hear of that!). Not wishing to steal Joanna’s thunder, she had yet

to announce news of their first child (due in January) which became public

knowledge a few weeks later, so that’s very exciting!

If you want to see the video, which only arrived last Saturday and brought

tears to my eye, cut and paste this link into Google.

The Savoy bit relates to Jo, Annabel and I getting ready (Gray’s is only a

taxi ride away) – they spent their first night there and Ed was generous

enough to make the room available to us. In fact they were incredibly lucky,

as the ‘room’ was an upgrade to the Marlene Dietrich suite!!) There’s also

footage of the usher’s lunch at a watering hole called The Bleeding Heart.

The bridges relate to the table theme – a great friend of ours, Jane Dalton,

provided beautiful drawings, so it’s nice the videographer included them.

I’m only sorry there aren’t strains of the choir singing because they were

Hope this hasn’t reached you too late in the season and that you are having

a good summer yourself. We’re Cape Cod bound on Tuesday, so looking forward

to that.

You may or may not have received the email from EW about the death of Russell Locke. Here is the link to the obituary. I will remember him for his patience and reserve when I was elected Head of Choir senior year having gotten kicked out sophomore year for climbing over the balcony. Oh, my. Thank you, Mr. Locke for never saying anything.

My son in law is being treated for multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow. He is currently at Sloan Kettering for a month with my daughter in total isolation. Doing well. I get to be nanny of my four grandchildren for the month! Love that part.

Heather Henderson Mewhinney

News from Virginia. I AM RETIRING!!!!(so scarey) Nate and I went to the Florida panhandle the week before last and put in a bid on a house in Panama City. If all proceeds as planned, the closing is to be in the 15th of July. My last day of work is June 13th so will be packing and downsizing like a mad woman. We are moving from an over 3000 sq ft house to a 1500 sq ft house! Our son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter have lived with us for the past two years and they are staying here and we are running away from home. I will miss them but it certainly is time to experience empty nest. Heather

Kathy Thompson McCurdy

I am enjoying being a grandmother to my 13-year old step-granddaughter and to my 20-month old grandson. We all love horses!
